The "International Symposium : Women and the Media, Access to Expression and Decision-making", held in Toronto, Canada, from 28 February to 3 March 1995, was organized jointly by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), through its Communication Division, and by the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. The Symposium constituted one of UNESCO's major contributions to and was a pre-conference of the "Fourth United Nations WorldConference on Women: Action for Equality, Development and Peace", Beijing, 4-15 September 1995. The Toronto Symposium was part of a series of UNESCO communication activities aimed at improving the status of women and women's access to expression and decision-making in and through the media; it was also the final event in a series of seventeen regional meetings on the topic. The Toronto Symposium was attended by more than 200 participants and observers from 30 countries. The final Report is an 81 pages publication that includes background, outlines of seminar and interventions, and the proposed Amendments from the Toronto Seminar to the Beijing Plan for Action.
