Thematic Areas
Short Description / Abstract
The closing declaration made by the community media practitioners and stakeholders from the first Round Table on Community Media and Sustainable Development in Marrakesh, Morocco, stresses equal freedom of access and participation to information and communications. It notes the crucial contribution that community media, as independent, community-driven and civil society-based, can make to the achievement of the goals of the Millennium Declaration. Furthermore, it calls for governments to ensure nondiscriminatory legal frameworks for community media; for new broadcast licensing targets to be established; and for a donor civil society partnership to invest in and support community-driven information and communication initiatives.
