In 1994, in collaboration with Isis-International, Manila and the International Women’s Tribune Centre (IWTC), WACC held the first ever international conference on women and communication entitled ‘Women Empowering Communication’ (WEC) in Bangkok. The conference was much more than just a meeting to discuss issues and plan strategies for action. It was also a celebration of women’s creativity and initiatives in communication. Attended by 430 participants from 80 countries, the conference was a multi-media feast with keynote speeches, songs, dances and poetry, presentations of communication models and audio-visual presentations on a different sub-theme every day. There were publication and poster exhibits, radio transmissions and post-conference training workshops on video, drama, publishing and e-mail networking.
